Review: Love and Other Unknown Variables by Shannon Lee Alexander

Love and Other Unknown Variables by Shannon Lee Alexander

Publisher: Entangled Teen (Entangled)

Charlie Hanson has a clear vision of his future. A senior at Brighton School of Mathematics and Science, he knows he’ll graduate, go to MIT, and inevitably discover solutions to the universe’s greatest unanswered questions. He’s that smart. But Charlie’s future blurs the moment he reaches out to touch the tattoo on a beautiful girl’s neck.

The future has never seemed very kind to Charlotte Finch, so she’s counting on the present. She’s not impressed by the strange boy at the donut shop—until she learns he’s a student at Brighton where her sister has just taken a job as the English teacher. With her encouragement, Charlie orchestrates the most effective prank campaign in Brighton history. But, in doing so, he puts his own future in jeopardy.

By the time he learns she's ill—and that the pranks were a way to distract Ms. Finch from Charlotte’s illness—Charlotte’s gravitational pull is too great to overcome. Soon he must choose between the familiar formulas he’s always relied on or the girl he’s falling for (at far more than 32 feet per second squared).

Love and other unknown variables is full of geeky humor and real life problems. I devoured this book!
Ok, first off, infinite hope is NOT nonsense, Charlie!! Hope is what makes you get up in the morning, so reconsider your possition. On the other hand, that sounds like a lovely tattoo!

Charlotte's character has so many layers that figuring her out is slowly but worth it. She comes off like this wild girl, like she just wants to rebel to her perfect sister but as the story moves on, there's so much to her reason and motives to do what she does and it really captured me.

Charlie is a great voice. He lives in a world of logics, and I think the author has done an amazing job at keeping math and literature together in this book (I thought I would never say something like this!) Feelings are something he's not so familiar with, not love and even more, not girls but he's a logics person, he'll figure it out.

This is a great story of coming of age. First loves, accepting this scary feeling of getting out of highschool and facing the reality that maybe, not everything is like we imagined. All the what ifs, the preassure, the anxiety and the feelings every 18 year old have in the head is sometimes too much. The author did an incredible job at keeping all this real.

Love and Other Unknown Variables is a great book that will catch you from the start and will keep you turning the page until the end. I love the story, the pace and the voice. Every character had a well defined voice and added their own little bit to the story, helping it moving it and Charlie in his journey and I loved every word in it!
